Guests Score Big on Toy Story Mania! During First
Month
of Attraction's Operation at Disney's Hollywood Studios
The points are piling up and the spring-action shooters are
getting a workout during the first month of operation at Toy
Story Mania! -- the new 4-D attraction at Disney's Hollywood
Studios.
An arcade-style tally at the ride's conclusion heralds the
high scores of the day as guests try their best to beat the
top totals. During the first month of daily operation, daily
high scores regularly topped 200,000+ points, while all-time
highs have reached the 300,000+ point range.
In Toy Story Mania!, guests don 3-D glasses and enter a
wild and wooly 4-D world of Woody, Buzz and other favorite
"Toy Story" characters. Inspired by the Disney-Pixar
films "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," Toy
Story Mania! raises the bar for interactive ride-game
attractions.
As vehicles move among midway-style game booths, guests aim
for 3-D, animated targets using their own on-board
spring-action shooters. Players pair up and sit side-by-side,
scoring points in a friendly competition that delivers an
ever-changing variety of targets and surprises.
As they play, guests can actually see the "virtual
objects" they've launched -- everything from pies,
plastic eggs and pointed darts ... to baseballs, rings and
suction-cup darts -- leave their spring-action shooters and
hit (or miss) the targets. And thanks to the 4-D special
effects technology, they may sense objects popping out of the
3-D scenes and whirring past them.
Disneyland Resort in California also welcomed Toy Story
Mania! when the attraction debuted June 17 at Disney's
California Adventure theme park.
Independence Day Sparkles Across Walt Disney World
Resort With Star-Spangled Pyrotechnics Performances
A popular July 4th tradition
at Walt Disney World Resort will continue this year as
star-spangled salutes to America's independence are
presented all across the Florida Vacation Kingdom.
Here's some of the fireworks fun scheduled for July 4
this year:
- A Fourth of July "Concert in the Sky" will
light up the night at Magic Kingdom in honor of
Independence Day. Featuring a magnificent display of
aerial fireworks, dazzling pyrotechnic effects and dynamic
music, the show, entitled "Disney's Celebrate
America!-A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky," is a
grand tribute to the United States, its people and
traditions. The special show is scheduled for 9 p.m. Magic
Kingdom also will feature two performances of the "SpectroMagic"
nighttime parade, first at 10:30 p.m. and then again at
12:30 a.m. that same night.
- A holiday-inspired finale will be added to Epcot's
nightly fireworks extravaganza, "Illuminations:
Reflections of Earth." The park's American Adventure
pavilion also will feature enhanced entertainment
throughout the day, with visits from historic characters
who will share their stories. American Adventure also will
feature additional performances of its signature musical
group, Voices of Liberty, performing patriotic classics.
- Disney's Hollywood Studios will present a special July
4th fireworks show at 9 p.m., with skyrockets and
patriotic music filling the air at the showbiz-themed
park. The park's popular "Fantasmic!" show,
featuring fireworks, animation, dancing waters and Disney
characters, will be presented on July 4 at 10:30 p.m.
- Downtown Disney will present July 4th fireworks at 10:30
p.m. for the revelers, shoppers and diners enjoying the
nighttime entertainment district.
The Wave Opens at Disney's Contemporary Resort With
Plenty of Healthy Choices and an Innovative Wine List
A new Disney dining experience, The Wave, has opened at
Disney's Contemporary Resort, serving breakfast, lunch and
dinner daily in a 220-seat restaurant that takes casual dining
into the health-conscious 21st century.
The classic American breakfast menu includes plenty of egg
creations, but guests also can make their own Wave muesli or
sip a Beta Berry Smoothie with raspberry puree and non-fat
yogurt blended with Odwalla Berries GoMega (a great source of
Omega-3). The Pure Sunshine breakfast cocktail features
organic vodka and orange juice topped with Vitamin Energy
Drink. Coffee is organic Colombian (fair trade and
"Smithsonian-certified bird-friendly") and teas are
whole leaf Pyramid bags in flavors from chamomile blossoms to
monsoon chai.
At lunch, light eaters might enjoy lettuce wraps with sautéed
lamb and bay scallops, or a lump crab cake with crispy papaya
slaw. Entrées range from oversized salads and a vegetarian
sandwich with grilled tofu, roasted veggies and herb goat
cheese on multi-grain bread to an Angus chuck burger with
cheese and Applewood smoked bacon, or a classic grilled
Reuben.
The dinner menu offers a delicious spin on comfort classics
such as pan-seared Alaskan black cod with corn and edamame
(soybean) stew with cilantro chutney; braised lamb shank with
bulgur lentil stew and red wine sauce, and a nouvelle chicken
pot pie with thyme pastry. Sides at both lunch and dinner
include braised greens and roasted sweet potatoes and carrots.
The innovative wine list has a quirky claim to fame -- all
screw caps, no corks. Cutting-edge wines from around the globe
are showcased on the list.
Tampa Bay Bucs Return to Disney for NFL Training Camp
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will come back for their seventh
NFL training camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex,
from July 26-Aug. 14.
The team's daily practices are free and open to the public,
with the schedule often incorporating two-a-day sessions in
the morning and afternoon.
Featuring one of the league's most animated head coaches,
the Jon Gruden-led Bucs seek to build on their winning ways
from 2007 with a collection of established stars such as
quarterback Jeff Garcia, linebacker Derrick Brooks and
cornerback Ronde Barber.
The 2008 season will also see the return of Warrick Dunn
back into the Buccaneer fold. The diminutive, big-play
tailback spent his first five seasons with Tampa Bay, totaling
more than 6,500 yards of offense and 26 touchdowns.
A fertile breeding ground for success, the Buccaneers have
produced three division titles and one Super Bowl championship
since first arriving at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex
in 2002. Fans once again will be allowed the unique access to
witness the daily workouts and drills that NFL players
undertake in preparation for the rigorous regular season,
along with routine autograph opportunities following practice.
Crab-Catching Stars of TV's 'Deadliest Catch' Slated to
Appear at Epcot
The Norway pavilion at Epcot will host Sig Hansen -- one of
the featured stars on the popular reality series on The
Discovery Channel, "The Deadliest Catch" -- for an
in-park appearance July 10-13, 2008. Hansen will appear inside
The Puffin's Roost, the pavilion's merchandise location, each
day. He will be joined by his brothers, Edgar and Norman
Hansen, who also appear on the show.
A fourth-generation Norwegian fisherman, Sig Hansen is the
captain of the Northwestern, one of the crab-catching
vessels on "The Deadliest Catch." He, Edgar and
Norman own and operate the Northwestern. Based in
Seattle, Wash., the Hansens have fished together for nearly 20
years.
The Hansens' crab-catching skills on the television show
also have inspired "Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm,"
a video game for the Xbox 360 system.
In addition to signing autographs and posing for photos,
the Hansens will have Northwestern merchandise for sale
during their Epcot appearance.
Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Celebrates Two
Decades
On July 1, 1988, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
opened its doors and invited Walt Disney World guests to
rediscover a bygone era of elegance and luxury among the
gabled roofs and Victorian balustrades of a
turn-of-the-century seaside resort.
In the two decades that followed, approximately 15 million
guests have enjoyed the splendor of its 867 deluxe
accommodations and the gracious hospitality of its cast
members. Countless others have been enchanted by the creative
cuisine of its incomparable restaurants, including
Narcoossee's, Cítricos and Victoria & Albert's, a
consecutive recipient of the annual AAA Five-Diamond Award
since 2000.
Disney's flagship resort is celebrating its 20th
anniversary with plenty of "grand" new magic for
Grand Floridian guests, including extensive renovations
completed in late 2007 that upgraded its guest rooms with
sophisticated new furnishings, carpet, drapes, bedspreads,
flat-screen televisions and more.
Also new is the latest yacht to bear the Grand 1 name,
a 52-foot Sea Ray pleasure craft available for chartered
cruises across the tranquil waters of Seven Seas Lagoon and
Bay Lake, and a floating view of nighttime fireworks
spectaculars above Magic Kingdom.
Coming soon is an opulent marble floor to be showcased
throughout the hotel's main lobby and mezzanine. Designed by
the creative minds of Walt Disney Imagineering, the lavish
enhancement will add another magical touch to a destination
resort created as a fantasy image of Florida's past.
For rates and availability of Grand Floridian rooms and
suites, guests may call 407/W-DISNEY or visit disneyworld.com.
Guests to Join Disney-Pixar Characters in Wildest 'Block
Party'
as Rockin' Bash Comes to Disney's Hollywood Studios This
Spring
The Year of A Million Dreams rocks on at Walt Disney World
Resort this spring with "Block
Party Bash," a funtastic parade featuring
favorite Disney-Pixar characters. Currently scheduled for a
mid-March opening at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the
high-energy extravaganza cranks up the music and excitement to
the max, putting guests in the middle of the wildest Disney
parade ever--a non-stop musical block party that doubles as a
fun-filled interactive street spectacular.
The famous Green Army Men lead the procession of favorite
Disney-Pixar characters that entice guests to dance, play and
party as the "bash" makes its way down Hollywood
Boulevard.
In addition to an eclectic mix of fun-inducing retro tunes,
"Block Party Bash" includes appearances by some of
the most popular characters including Woody and Buzz Lightyear
from "Toy Story," Mike and Sully from
"Monsters, Inc." and Flik and Atta from "A
Bug's Life."
The "block party" transforms into major
choreographed sections that immerse guests into a feeling of
playing with the "toys," screaming with the
"monsters" and dancing with the "bugs."
The performance is bursting with dancers, acrobats, jumping
stilts and a "mini" caravan of electric scooters
that combine to fill the performance area with an
awe-inspiring array of visuals and sound sensations.
The elaborate set pieces for this interactive parade/show
include large floats themed to "Toy Story,"
"Monsters, Inc." and "A Bug's Life,"
trampoline units (invented specifically for "Block Party
Bash"), and "tweeners" (smaller floats that
look like stacks of toy blocks that double as dance stages,
decorative prop boxes and sources of amazing special effects).
These rolling stages camouflage impressive telescoping towers
that rise during the finale of the extravaganza revealing Mr.
and Mrs. Incredible and Frozone from the Disney presentation
of a Pixar Film, "The Incredibles."

Theme Park Fans, Beverage Industry Experts Cheer
Disney World
The fans and experts have had
their say, proclaiming Walt Disney World Resort the home
of both the best ride and best libations in the country:
- The Twilight Zone™ Tower of
Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios was recently voted
"Best Ride in America" by users of Theme Park
Insider Web site (www.themeparkinsider.com).
The popular attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, which
sends guests plummeting 13 floors in an out-of-control
elevator, beat out 63 other attractions in a three-week
"March Madness"-style match-up of favorite rides
and attractions from theme parks across the country. Theme
Park Insider Editor Robert Niles said users cited the
attraction's "addictive random drop sequences, which
reward repeat riders with unique experiences" as a
contributing factor to the win.
- Walt Disney World Resort was honored with two Cheers
Awards for Beverage Excellence by Cheers Magazine,
a leading beverage industry trade publication. Top honors
were bestowed in "Best Chain Overall Beverage
Program" and "Best Chain Signature Drink"
for the Blue "Glow-Tini."
'Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian' Comes to Life
In
New Experience at Disney's Hollywood Studios
Some of the characters from the timeless fantasy "The
Chronicles of Narnia" come to life in a new experience at
Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park.
"Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian," an all-new
soundstage experience (opening in late June), offers an
in-depth and unique look into the making of "The
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," the hit motion
picture released in May 2008 by Walt Disney Pictures and
Walden Media Films.
The journey begins at the attraction queue where guests can
test their knowledge of the "Narnia" stories. Next,
guests will have an option of participating in a meet and
greet with Prince Caspian himself. Or, fans have the option to
head directly into the new movie attraction "Journey Into
Narnia: Prince Caspian."
The soundstage experience features a behind-the-scenes look
at the making of the film with narration from director Andrew
Adamson. Guests also can view authentic props from the movie
set and costumes worn by the actors and actresses in the film.
It's easy to get caught up in the
excitement of a trip to Walt Disney World Resort, what with 40
square miles of attractions, entertainment and recreation at
guests' beck and call.
But what about the "bottom line"? What's all the
fun going to cost? With a little planning and a pinch of pixie
dust, a trip to the Vacation Kingdom can be awesome and even
more affordable.
Here are some money-saving -- and value-adding -- tips for
guests to consider as they think about when to go, how to get
there, where to stay, what kinds of tickets to buy, and how to
eat more economically.
Accommodations, Dining and Deals
Walt Disney World has 22 resorts that vary in price, allowing
guests to pay for only the amenities that are important to
them. Value resort guests are treated to larger-than-life
theming, swimming pools and playgrounds, arcade rooms, and
standard amenities -- at rates beginning at $82 per night.
About one-third of the Disney hotel accommodations -- a total
of 8,426 rooms -- are at the four Value resorts. Families who
prefer the great outdoors can rent a campsite at Disney's Fort
Wilderness Resort and Campground (there are 784 available) and
either pitch a tent or bring along an RV. Sites with full
hookups start at $46 per night, and sites with partial hookups
can be had for $41 per night. (Of course, moderate and deluxe
resorts are available for guests who prefer additional
amenities during their stay. By contrast, rooms at moderate
resorts start at $145, while rooms at deluxe resorts start at
$215.) Guestroom rates at Walt Disney World Resort vary
based on the time of year that a guest visits. Value
Season, which takes place over select weeks throughout the
year, offers lower room rates than peak or holiday seasons
(value prices are available for 130 days in 2007 as compared
to 59 days of peak-season pricing). Often, Value Seasons
coincide with smaller theme park crowds, meaning less time in
line and more time having fun! Compared to Peak or Holiday
Seasons, Value Season pricing can save a guest anywhere from
$30 (at a value resort) to $120 (at select deluxe resorts) per
night. Within each hotel, guestroom rates vary based on the
view from the balcony or terrace. For example, at Disney's
Polynesian Resort, guests can choose from a garden, lagoon or
Magic Kingdom view. During value season, lagoon-view rooms run
$96 more and Magic Kingdom-view rooms run $126 more than
those with a garden view (the good news is that garden-view
rooms make up 616 of the 847 rooms at the resort). At a Value
resort, the difference between a standard and preferred room
(5,740 of 8,426 rooms are standard) is $12 per night -- which
can nearly pay for two days of the Disney Dining Plan over a
six-night vacation. Guests of Walt Disney World resorts who
purchase "Magic Your Way" tickets along with their
hotel accommodations are eligible to add the Disney Dining
Plan to create a more inclusive "cruise-style"
vacation package. For each night of their resort stay, guests
can enjoy two meals and a snack (tax and gratuity included) at
more than 100 select restaurants throughout Walt Disney World
parks and hotels -- at savings of up to 40% off the average
non-dining plan price. The Disney Dining Plan costs $38.99 per
person age 10/up per night and $10.99 per child age 3-9 per
night. Guests add the dining option when they book a
"Magic Your Way" package (accommodations and park
tickets). The Walt Disney World Web site's "Special
Offers" section features deals throughout the year,
so guests should check the page often or speak with their
travel agent about promotions. The Web site is disneyworld.com.
Walt Disney World Resort offers several all-you-care-to-eat
restaurants including Boma-Flavors of Africa at Disney's
Animal Kingdom Lodge ($25.99 per adult, $16.99 per child for
dinner) and Cape May Café at Disney's Beach Club Resort
($25.99 per adult, $11.99 per child for dinner) where guests
can pay one price for an unlimited selection of appetizers,
entrees and desserts. Thirsty guests at Walt Disney World
resorts can save by purchasing length-of-stay refillable
drinking mugs for $11.99, good for unlimited free refills
on any fountain drink at the resort's cafeteria.
Admission Media
- The more you play the less you pay per day! That's one
of the charms of Disney's "Magic Your Way"
ticketing system that allows guests to customize their
vacations to the specific needs of their travel party.
Guests decide the number of days and whether optional
features such as park hopping, visits to attractions
outside the theme parks and "non-expiration" of
tickets are important. The per-day ticket cost decreases
the longer a guest stays, so where a one-day base ticket
costs $67 per day, a seven-day base ticket costs just $30
per day. Not to mention the total price difference between
four- and 10-day tickets is just $14.
- Guests looking to experience some of Disney's non-theme
park entertainment options can add the Water Park Fun
& More feature to their "Magic Your Way"
base ticket. For $50, guests are entitled to three to six
visits (depending on the number of days on the base
ticket) to their choice of Disney's Blizzard Beach,
Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, DisneyQuest, Downtown Disney
Pleasure Island or Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
One-day tickets to these recreational venues range from
$10.28 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex to $39 at
one of Disney's water parks. Thus, even the three-visit
add-on (offered with one-, two- and three-day base
tickets) could be worth more than twice the $50 cost.
- Save on multi-day theme park tickets through Advance
Purchase Savings available for guests who purchase
through The Disney Store locations outside Florida, disneyworld.com,
or a Disney reservation specialist (407/934-7639) before
leaving home. Guests can save $2 to $17 per ticket on
"Magic Your Way" tickets for four to 10 days
with the Park Hopper and/or Water Park Fun & More
option. Guests not only save money but also time as they
can skip past the lines of guests purchasing individual
theme park tickets at the box offices or concierge desks.
- When deciding what "Magic Your Way" tickets to
purchase, guests should consider how much time they want
to devote to non-theme park activities offered on
property such as the themed pools at Walt Disney World
resorts and recreational activities such as tennis,
jogging or water sports. In addition, Downtown Disney
Marketplace and the boardwalk at Disney's Boardwalk never
charge an admission fee, so guests can wander amidst the
unique shops and restaurants, and on select nights, view
outdoor entertainment without spending a dime.
Travel and Transportation
- Guests who travel by plane and stay at a Walt Disney
World owned-and-operated resort can take advantage of Disney's
Magical Express, a service that allows guests to check
their bags at their hometown airport, bypass baggage claim
at Orlando International Airport and board
state-of-the-art motor coaches to the Vacation Kingdom,
where their bags magically appear in their room after they
check in. The complimentary service not only saves time at
the airport, but also relieves guests of transfer costs
between the airport and resort.
- All it takes is a Walt Disney World Resort hotel ID to
secure a complimentary space aboard one of the Walt
Disney World Transportation System's buses, monorails
or boats. Resort guests can travel throughout the Vacation
Kingdom with door-to-door service directly from the resort
to theme park entrances and other recreational venues like
Downtown Disney. Several Walt Disney World resort hotels,
such as Disney's Yacht Club, Disney's Beach Club and
Disney's Boardwalk located in the Epcot Resort Area, are
even within walking distance to the theme parks!
- Annual passholders and guests of Walt Disney World
resort hotels are exempt from parking fees at the theme
parks. Guests who present a resort ID, resort parking
pass or annual pass enter the lot for free no matter how
many parks they visit during their stay.
- Animal lovers can avoid paying a pet sitter by bringing
their furry friends on vacation too! Walt Disney World
Resort offers kennel services for just $13 a day, where
pets can lounge in style. Dogs are provided with free
Purina pet food during daily feedings (owners can opt to
bring their own food if they'd like), plus plenty of love
from the staff. Pet owners are welcome to visit their
animals 24 hours a day, and a certified veterinarian is on
call at all times in case of emergencies.
- Families with small children can save by bringing
their own stroller instead of renting one daily at the
theme parks. Or, if they choose to rent, length-of-stay
strollers can be purchased at a reduced rate. A single
stroller costs $10 to rent for a single day or $8 per day
if rented for length of stay (length-of-stay wheelchairs
and ECV's are also available for handicapped guests).
- Families should weigh the pros and cons of driving
versus flying to Walt Disney World Resort when planning a
vacation. Although driving may initially seem more
affordable, when guests consider gas, tolls and the costs
of adding mileage to a vehicle, it may be less
expensive to fly. Guests who'd prefer to drive might
also consider renting a vehicle to use during their
trip instead of adding mileage to their personal
automobile.
Don't forget these tidbits!
- Children under the age of three are admitted for
free to any of the Walt Disney World four theme
parks.
- Guests under the age of eighteen stay for free in
their parent's hotel room at any of the Walt
Disney World resorts.
- Book dinner packages with preferred seating for
"Fantasmic!" at Disney-MGM Studios or the
holiday Epcot special show Candlelight Processional
for no extra charge.
- Create a budget for souvenirs and use it as a
teaching tool for young guests. Disney Dollars can
be purchased in any amount and distributed to children
to spend throughout their vacation. While they learn
about the value of a dollar, guests create a budget!
- Annual passholders receive a plethora of
discounts including reduced rates at Walt Disney World
resorts, 10% off merchandise purchases at Downtown
Disney's World of Disney store and up to 15% off at
select restaurants on property.
- Guests who hold a Disney Rewards Visa card earn
1% back in the form of Disney Dollars that can be used
to purchase Walt Disney World theme park tickets,
resort stays or Disney merchandise. Cardholders also
receive a 10% discount on merchandise at Downtown
Disney's World of Disney store and 20% off the
non-discounted price on select tours at Walt Disney
World Resort. Plus, when guests book a Walt Disney
World vacation using their card, they receive 0%
financing for the first six months.
- The new affordability Web site (disneyworld.com/affordable)
makes it even easier for guests to plan their Walt
Disney World vacation using money-saving tips, an
online booking engine that highlights affordable
prices and a personalized take-away that guests can
print and share with family when discussing vacation
options.
For more information about Walt Disney World Resort,
guests can visit disneyworld.com
