El Pirata y El Perico
(photos below)
UPDATE: On Saturday, June
23, 2007, Aronda ate lunch at El Pirata y El Perico, and found
that this restaurant now serves fresh brewed Iced Tea--it's
available in unsweetened, and it's being made on site!
Across from The Pirates of the
Caribbean, El Pirata y El Perico serves up Mexican-style foods
in a convenient counter service venue. This is one of the few
places at Walt Disney World which offers tacos.
As of Spring 2007, El Pirata y
El Perico had changed the way the food is served. In the past,
the tacos and taco salads were prepared with all toppings
applied in the kitchen before they were served. Now, the tacos
are served with only the meat placed into the shells, and the
taco salad with only the meat in the taco bowl, and the
lettuce, cheese, sauces, and other available items are
included on a topping bar. Aronda believes that this change
was due to excessive "special order" items which may
have been slowing the kitchen down too much, but the topping
bar is a great convenience to all who use it--add as much or
as little as you want!
Despite the relative uniqueness
of the menu here, El
pirata y El perico has been open only occasionally for the
past several years--much like the rarely available Tomorrowland
Terrace Noodle Station. Look for it to open a few hours
(frequently for lunch, such as 12-3) during periods of high
attendance, but be sure to have a back-up plan in mind in case
it's not open while you're there. The Times Guide which comes
with your park map will list the operating hours or indicated
that it's closed for the day.
This is a terrific restaurant!
Aronda and her staff enjoy the tacos--especially since the
introduction of the topping bar. The food seems to be above
the quality of the usual in-park counter service, and the
prices are reasonable as well. Its proximity to Pirates of the
Caribbean makes it an ideal spot for lunch after taking in the
recently revised attraction. Be sure to check out the vintage
nautical/Caribbean decorations in the dining room. If you like
tacos, be sure to check this place out!
