Norway Pavilion
This pavilion, one of the two (2) "newer"
additions to Epcot's World Showcase (of the eleven pavilions
in World Showcase, nine were present when Epcot opened in
1982; Norway and Morocco were later additions), is located
between Mexico and China. It's home to some terrific shopping,
dining, and one of two "rides" in World
Showcase--Maelstrom.
The pavilion is lavishly themed--it's truly a pleasure to
spend time here. The restaurant--Restaurant Akershus--features
a character buffet throughout the day. A "princess
breakfast" occurs here in the morning, with seating times
well in advance of World Showcase's opening time at 11
A.M.
Maelstrom is a terrific boat ride through the Norway of
Viking times to the present--it includes a run-in with trolls
and a waterfall plummet that leans moderately toward
"thrill".
A Stave Church stands near the promenade. Inside, an
exhibit illuminates the Viking era in Norwegian history, with
some representations of some prominent Vikings as well as
interpretive information. This building previously held an
exhibit regarding the stave church's influence in Norwegian
history.
Off to one side of the pavilion (the side closest to
Mexico) is a large wooden Viking ship--for a long time this
was a play area for the kids, but it has been closed off in
recent years. The kids--as well as the adults--will want to
stop into the Puffin's Roost gift shop, where a larger-than-life
troll is always ready to pose with you for pictures.
Live entertainment features include regular performances by
Spelmanns Gledje, a musical ensemble which plays traditional
Norwegian music.

within the Norway pavilion. Maelstrom is ahead, while
Restaurant Akershus is to the
right barely in the picture. To
the left, but not visible, is the gift shop, a counter-service
bakery, and the Stave Church.
