Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn
(photos below)
Located in Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom, Pecos Bill
Tall Tale Inn is a counter service restaurant that's big on
atmosphere and indoor dining space! The
food here is generally typical counter service fare,
including burgers and similar sandwiches, but it's tasty and
reasonably well prepared. A nice feature here is the
"toppings bar," which includes tomato slices,
lettuce, grated cheese, condiments, and even grilled onions
which Guests can apply to their burgers (and taco salads).
This restaurant has remained basically unchanged since the
Magic kingdom's opening back in '71, though the menu has
undergone some improvements over the decades. The theming here
is that of a wild west saloon, complete with rough-hewn rafter
beams and western items on display in the dining areas. One
dining room evokes the great southwest, with adobe walls and
even an upstairs balcony overlooking the dining area (balcony
is not accessible)--the Mexican influence is heavy here.
This restaurant includes several self-service order
stations. These devices allow Guests to order from the full
Pecos Bill menu using touch-screen technology, and then pay
with room charge, Disney Dining Plan, or credit card--a handy
way to have more registers open for Guests without needing the
additional staff that would be required for ordinary
registers. Restaurant staff is always nearby to help you if
you encounter any troubles.
Being a very large restaurant, this one tends to become
crowded during meal hours. In the fall of 2009, Disney began
regulating Guest traffic within the restaurant at peak times.
During periods of regulation, all doors are locked except the
main entrance (Guests may leave through other doors, but entry
is through the front only), and staff allows Guests to sit at
a table only when they have their food (or food receipt) in
hand. Also, some Guests have complained about recent chair
updates here. The seats used to have backs, but have been
converted to backless stools (which are padded). We understand
that some Guests liked to lean back and/or hang bags from the
backs, but we feel that the padding is ample exchange for the
seat backs!
As with nearly all counter service restaurants in Walt
Disney World, this eatery no longer brews its own iced tea,
instead relying on the "Peak" tea dispensers for
this beverage. In our opinion, the time spent brewing tea
(which, with an industrial Bunn machine, involves tossing a
tea bag into a basket and pressing a button) was time well
spent. We feel slighted by Disney, which seems to believe that
fresh brewed tea isn't necessary in a world-class resort. This
brings the tea in line with the longer-running travesty of
Nescafe "coffee machines" which mix up instant and
perpetrate it to be "real" coffee. Both tea and
coffee are dispensed from "machines" which are
deceptively designed to imply that the dispensed products are
actually brewed. Please, if you dislike this practice, don't
hesitate to complain to restaurant staff as well as to the
Guest Relations folks.
