Super Soap Weekend 2006
(photos below)
The 2007 ABC Super Soap Weekend will occur November
10-11. Click here for 2007 info!
At the Disney-MGM Studios, ABC Daytime TV hosts an
extravaganza spotlighting its soap opera lineup. Occurring in
November, one weekend is set aside to celebrate this popular
genre. Included in the festivities are celebrity motorcades
featuring daytime TV stars--each motorcade ends at a large
stage erected in front of the Sorcerer's Hat, where the stars
host a discussion in which they talk about their shows--and
themselves, of course!!
Additional events include opportunities to meet celebrities
and get autographs, but because of the popularity of these
events, Disney gives FastPASSes on the morning of the event.
If you're interested in taking advantage of this, be sure to
arrive early and read the event guide (in 2006, the event
guide was a special-edition ABC Soaps magazine)
carefully to determine exactly where you need to go to
get the FastPASS associated with your preferred star.
An interesting feature is Soap Central, a large shop set up
especially to sell Super Soap Weekend merchandise. The
must-have item is the event tee-shirt, but there are quite a
few special-edition items offered over this weekend. In 2006,
Soap Central was located in a section of the ABC
Commissary restaurant. Aronda was surprised to find a
large section of props for sale from the soaps--mostly
clothing--organized by show title. There were several racks
with clothes from the shows for sale, each tagged with vital
info about the item. Prices were fairly reasonable--starting
at around $10 up to over $100. Dresses were around $50, shoes
$25--for show-biz memorabilia, though it did seem pricey for
used clothing!! It reminded us of an upscale garage sale, but
for avid fans, this could be just the thing to make the
weekend.
The event was sponsored by Colgate, and there were goody
bags for everyone!! In the bags were samples of various
Colgate products, most notably a full-size tube of
toothpaste--very nice indeed.
Needless to say, the park was crowded over
the 2006 event!! During the celebrity "talk shows"
Hollywood Ave. (leading up to the stage) was packed with
people trying to get a look. Soap Central was quite busy as
well. Everywhere, folks could be seen wearing the Super Soap
Weekend tee-shirts and carrying their Colgate goody bags. This
appeared to be an event-specific crowd, too, with reasonable
wait time for attractions we randomly checked. This is great,
of course, for "regular" park guests, but for those
attending for Super Soap--watch out!! The events appeared to
fill up fast, so if you attend to take in some Super Soap
offerings, stay on your toes!!
